Ben + Georgia_757

These are the moments that I live for.

So, the need to write this post has been weighing on me for quite a while now – although, to be more accurate, it’s not necessarily the need to write about it that’s been weighing on me (that need is quite new), but the need to defend myself when I tell people that I’m a professional photographer. It’s this fire that rises up inside me when I tell people what I do for a living and they respond with the surprised/condescending nod, along with the corresponding judgmental ‘hmm!’ that they pretend means they’re fascinated.

I’m then overcome with this uncontrollable urge to yell ‘take me seriously!’ and shove a handful of my business cards in their face, along with my carefully developed website, my 1,600 Facebook likers, my business car loan, my expensive, professional-grade equipment, my hours spent on editing, emailing and bookwork, and my calendar full of client meetings and shoots as well as the weekends that are booked out with weddings. That I get paid for. Because it’s a real job.

But of course, I am more polite than this and just smile and explain that I run it full time and that it’s pretty great because I get paid to meet a lot of fabulous people and do what I love.

When people ask me what I do all day or tell me what a great job it must be – because ‘you take photos for one day and that’s it!’ – it’s demoralising; I won’t deny that it hurts. I know that it must be hard for people to fathom that there’s more to the story than just taking some happy snaps, but it’s a perspective that I know needs to change. I also know it’s a struggle that not only I face. It’s a struggle that all of us who work from home and who are privileged enough to combine a passion with an income face. How can something you love also be a profession, a career, a full-time income? I am blessed.

People are always so disappointed in me when I told them that I’m not going to teach full time next year after I finish my double degree in Education/Arts. I’ve had many people sit across from me and essentially ask me why I’m not going to use my degree and have a ‘real job.’ I then explain to them that I DO have a real job; I don’t just take photos – I then sit down and spend hours editing approximately 500-700 images individually per wedding, I meet with clients at least twice if not more to discuss their wedding day, create invoices, manage timelines, drive marketing plans, manage multiple lines of email communication at once, pay tax and organise multiple types of insurance – AND I also spend approximately 12-14 hours photographing a client’s wedding. Per wedding (and sometimes twice a weekend). I tell them that I not only run a business, but that I am my business – I am Public Relations, Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Customer Service, Administration and the CEO all rolled into one.

On top of this – I have to know my equipment – I have to have deep knowledge and be a master of my tools in order to be a master of my craft. This involves not only professional development – hours and hours of it – but thousands of dollars spent on equipment and software.

That said, it’s a beautiful struggle and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I LOVE my job, whether it be accredited as ‘real’ by the general population, or not. I get asked to be present for some of the most important moments of people’s lives; I get to capture memories, feelings, touches and moments – all filled with such beauty. People trust me with the immense responsibility of being the single person nominated to preserve the moments that their mind cannot. To create images that will be cherished by their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; to create a legacy for years to come. On top of this, I get to meet and know some of the most genuine, stunning and caring people (namely, my clients). Beyond this, I also get to know their families. I get to freeze in time the most important people in their world; their mother who is dying of breast cancer, their nephew who has down syndrome – and the way that their ‘tough’ father cries when walking his daughter down the aisle. I get to be the memory bank for the most precious moments of people’s lives.

Running a photography business is not a ‘pipe dream,’ and it’s not a side-job or a means to pay my way through uni. It’s my career – my full-time, life-time career. And it’s hard work. But it’s a career that is founded on bringing joy to those I have the privilege of photographing. At the end of the day, I’m not just a photographer, or a business woman working from home – I’m a joy bringer. And that’s more valuable to me than any title that comes from working under someone in an organisation. My job might not be ‘real’ in the eyes of society – but in my opinion, nothing could be more real than preserving memories and documenting someone’s life – that they not only lived, but loved.

Whilst I am often frustrated by the surface perspective that I don’t have a ‘real job’ – by people who don’t realise that I am ALL the departments of a business, not just a happy snapper – my greater frustration is this: that people don’t realise the value in immortalising those we love.

Yes, I have a ‘real job,’ but it’s not real just because I work hard and because it’s full time, or because I have to be a master of my craft (and all of the other reasons I’ve just listed above). It’s real because I capture the beauty in life. I capture real life.

I do this not just for you, but for your children and your grandchildren – so that in 50 years’ time, they can look at the photos I’ve taken and cherish them even when you are gone, just like you do with those old, black and white photos of your grandparents on their wedding day.

I could argue for hours about how I run a business and how I am 10 people rolled into one; I could plead with you to take me seriously because it’s hard work, but that would be superficial. That would be self-serving, and that is not why I photograph.

Yes, I photograph because it is my passion. But bigger than that, I photograph because I want you to be remembered and because your life is worth remembering.

So… I’ve been a bit tied up with my final teaching placement for my Education degree and have missed the last two months. I’m sorry! 🙁 Please forgive me! So this 10 on 10 isn’t wonderful and a bit slap dash, but that’s kind of how life around here is at the moment! And it’s a start with getting myself back into real life again, which is nice (9 days of placement to go!).

A lot has happened since my last 10 on 10 post in March! For one, my husband Ben has graduated with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science! Woohoo! And we’ve booked flights to India in September (which I am SO excited about) to see where my mum taught and lived for five years before she married my dad. 🙂 I’ve also started experimenting with free-lensing and it’s lots of fun!! The ring shot below is one of my first goes at it. 🙂

So… here goes nothing! I hope you enjoy seeing a snippet of life over the last couple of months. There’s 5 of Ben’s graduation (a couple taken by my lovely Mother in Law of Ben and I! – And, yes, I am still a head shorter than him when wearing stilettos…). The others are of the last wedding I photographed for the 2013-14 season, Sarah + James (another exciting thing!). And, yes, I know there are more than ten… but I need to make up for lost time. 😉 Enjoy. <3

Don’t forget to make your way around the circle/around the world… follow the links from the blogs! Head on over to the lovely Chantell’s post at Chasing Tydes to see her 10 on 10 for June and follow it all the way around back to me. Remember, some posts may not be up yet due to time differences but all should be live by 10am on the 10th of June USA EST. X

So… this month has been a little bit hectic and I’m a little late with my 10 on 10. So in this hectic month, I’ve headed back to uni for my final year of teaching (and I can’t WAIT for November already!!) – and I’ve shot 5 weddings and a family session. So in between all the trips to and from Adelaide, I’ve been attempting to edit, start uni work and somewhere in there spend a little bit of time with my husband. Therefore, I didn’t have time to dedicate special shooting time to my monthly project. 🙁 In its place, here’s 10 images of the past month’s weddings and shoots. Enjoy, my lovelies! X

Well… In South Aus we’ve been facing heatwave after heatwave of 40-45+ degrees Celsius days (that’s around 113 Fahrenheit). It’s been aaaaawful and I’m awfully jealous of all the Americans posting about the snow (and it’s hard work watching the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics too)!

I had SOOOO many things to post about this month but to keep it nice and simple I decided to post about our trip to Melbourne that Ben planned for my Christmas present (he’s a good husband). We stayed at The Cullen Art Series Hotel (SO nice! A balcony and a view, mmmm), visited St. Ali’s coffee in a cool little graffiti’d laneway, went shopping at the Richmond Rd factory outlets, and wandered the Queen Victoria Markets – all so beautiful, so full of colours and full of life. I LOVE the culture, the coffee, the hustle and bustle (I may have grown up in the country and now live here again, but I LOVE the city) and I love the way that Melbourne draws you in through its rich colours, vibrant street art and rampant multiculturalism. It makes me want to breathe deep and bask in the glorious glow of the anonymity that comes with being in a huge city full of people you don’t know. The freedom of it stirs my soul, especially having grown up in a small country town where such freedom was never an option. There are beautiful things about knowing all of the people you see, too, but that’s a story for another time. 😉

But I also have another little surprise for you – this month I’m posting 11 (sneaky, I know). Although it’s a poor quality iPhone selfie in the car on the way home from picking him up, I have a new little kitty to share with you! His name’s Oscar and I love him already. Ben thinks I’m a little bit of a crazy cat lady, and although I’d like to deny it, he’s probably right. I think he’s pretty cute, though and that more than makes up for it. 😉

Anyway, it’s time for you all to enjoy this month’s 10* images. Hope you’re all having a lovely day! Don’t forget to follow along to the next blog (link at the bottom) and all the way back around the circle to see the rest of the other lovely ladies’ 10 on 10s. And don’t forget to leave them some love. 😉

So, this year to keep me busy I’m doing a project with 15 other photographers called “10-on-10.” The principle is that on the 10th of every month, each photographer will post 10 photos of life over the past month or a particular subject – 10 photos that represent us and make us use our cameras outside of sessions and weddings etc. I’m excited to be using my camera in my everyday life (my husband not so much… he doesn’t like me taking photos of him 😉 ). So here’s my first 10 on 10. Enjoy. xx

This is our puppy Archie. He’s not quite six months and the cutest thing ever! He has the cheekiest personality yet is so loyal and affectionate. I love him a lot. He keeps me company on the long days Ben’s at work.

This is my wonderful husband, Ben. He’s strong, loyal, loving and kind. I love him a lot! He hates his photo taken, so don’t be surprised if he doesn’t feature here often… But I’ll try. 😉 He is so supportive of what I do and I’m so thankful that he encourages me to pursue my passion of photography wholeheartedly. As I write this we’re about to head off to Melbourne for the weekend for my Christmas present.. we’re staying in a nice hotel with a city view and off to do coffee (the next thing you’ll see) and shopping! I’m excited. 😀

This is my other love: coffee. I love it more than words can describe. I love its gorgeous aroma, the smell of beans both before and after they’ve been ground – and the gorgeous way the crema sits in a cup. And runs down the sides of it, too. It’s a beautiful, beautiful thing.

IMG_8239

And THIS represents the awfully hot days we’ve been having here – as much as I love coffee, it’s been so hot and sometimes a whole lotta icecream, milk and crema is a much better idea than a cappuccino. <3

And finally – this is where we spent New Years. It’s in a district called Avenue Range in the South East of SA. The caravan is my family’s and they go hunting nearby. It’s gorgeous and even though it pelted down with rain (hence the caravan… the original plan was to go camping in tents and swags eek!), it was so calming and peaceful. And the STARS! They were incredible. And Archie loved running around free, too. 😉

So, there you go. That’s January’s 10 on 10. I know it’s a bit unconventional this time, but I wanted to introduce a bit about me and my life. Next time I’ll pick an outing or something or you might even get to see a bit of our trip to Melbourne we’re about to leave on!

And now that I’m done – head on over to Love Bee Photography to see her post on A Day In The Life and then follow the blog circle around! Don’t forget to leave them some love. <3 xxx

PS. Note that due to time differences between different countries (we’re all over the world), some posts may not be up yet.
